585, AA. FIRE STOCK AND DRILL



Fire-stock of a soft wood; 19.7 x 4.6 x 2.6 cents; having holes drilled near the edges of the two sides with open slots for the spark; in each hole a black resinous material.

It also has a long irregular hole through the whole length from end to end, a hole connecting with it from top to base; and a third hole through the centre (approx.) from side to side; the purpose of which is not understood.

Drill stock and cap: the drill-stock of a hard reddish wood & grooved for string of bow; around the fire-stock end, a bronze ferrule. The fire-stick a rounded peg of similar wood as the fire-stock. Note the slot in side of the drill-stock to enable the tang of the fire-stick to be pushed out when the fire-stick is worn up.

L. of drill-stock, 11.0 cents.; L. of cap 4.5 cents, L. of fire-stick (exclusive of tang) 5.5 cents.
