The lid is similarly ornamented with ivory rails and styles, and with cnh, w3s and nb
symbols; but by its having four rails and three styles its surface is divided up into six small
panels, instead of two large panels as on the sides of the box.
The lower part of the interior of the box (about two-thirds down) is divided up into sixteen
small rectangular compartments each 11.0 x 9.8 edged with slats of ivory. These sixteen
compartments were, no doubt, intended to contain vessels, which are missing - these were
probably stolen on account of the valuable material of which they were made, such as gold
or silver.
The lid when closed on to the box was held in place by means of pins on the ends of the
underneath battens of the lid, which were inserted into corresponding holes in the interior
