620. Pottery Jar (broken) - contents of

This contains a quantity of brown material intermixed with white, the white being largely in the form of star shaped crystalline masses. It has only been possible to make a partial analysis on account of the lack of the necessary re-agents. Common salt Sulphate Alkaline carbonate (i.e. potassium or sodium carbonate) Tests negative

The crystals consist of some carbonate (though not potassium or sodium carbonate) but without other reagents it has not been possible to determine what the carbonate is.

Tartrate (typical of wine residues) appears to be absent or, if present, only in very small proportion.

Complete analysis to be made in Cairo.
