579 NECK PIECE AND CONTENTS OF VESSEL

<> linen binding 9.0 dark blue 11.5 blue red blue blue

The neck-piece was found separated from the lion-shaped vessel - lying on the ground not far away. The lid was still in place covering the mouth of the neck-piece, held in place by a linen binding - white linen cover bound with brown linen strips.

It would appear that during pilfering the contents of the various vessels in the chamber (Annexe), the thieves wrenched off the neck-piece which was fitted and luted into the top of the head of the lion, instead of removing the lid covering the mouth. As the neck-piece was fitted several centimetres into the head of the lion and the vessel was found in an upright position, it could not have fallen off by itself, unless gases formed by the contents caused it to blow off which is unlikely. However, the contents of this vessel - some kind of fatty material - is still intact and there were no traces of the substances ever having been interfered with.
