541. Contents

The material was tested chemically with the following results: - (a) Obtained good positive tests for potassium, carbonate, tartrate, chloride and sulphate. (b) Obtained negative tests for resin and calcium. The negative test for calcium is not conclusive proof of its absence, since in the absence of the necessary reagent, the best test could not be applied. (c) The water solution was alkaline to litmus.

The material therefore probably contained the following-named substances: Cream of tartar; potassium carbonate; sodium chloride (common salt) and sodium sulphate and is almost certainly impure argol, that it to say a wine residue.

Yeast cells could not be found.
