520 LARGE BELL-SHAPED KRATER (CALCITE) 1

POSITION: N.E. corner of chamber; under foot-end of bed No. 466; lying on side upon group of baskets Nos. 534, 535 and 542 and wine-jars Nos. 500 and 541 (see photo 1145). DIMENSIONS: Max. H. 58.5; H. of stem-piece 25.0; Max. diam. of lip 25.0; Max. diam of foot 22.0, cents.

DESCRIPTION: A large bell-shaped krater supported by a cylindrical stem and foot of semi-translucent calcite. The crater (one piece) is luted to the cylindrical stem-piece (one piece) with a wax and whiting (stopping) adhesive. The special features of the krater with spreading lip is that under the lip a floral frieze is sculptured as if embossed and the sides are partially fluted (in fact it represents the papyrus umbel tied round at the neck and base). Round the neck of the krater garland ornament (see note attached). Round the lower part of bowl of krater garland ornament (see note attached). A panel on front of krater bearing the names and titles of King and Queen (see note attached). The cylindrical supporting stem and foot quite plain.
