483. JUG WITH HANDLE (CALCITE)
(Amenhetep III)

POSITION: On floor, towards west wall, opposite north jamb of doorway, with Nos. 480 and 482 (see photos 1143, 1144).

DIMENSIONS: H. 35.5; Max. Diam of bowl 20.8; diam. of lip 14.2; diam. of foot 11.5 cents.

DESCRIPTION: A globular jug with cylindrical neck, broad handle, wide lip, and circular foot, wrought of semi-translucent calcite. Has no ornament save two ridges encircling the upper part of the neck, and representing the binding or attachment of the broad flat handle to the neck, obviously derived from some earlier form of this type of vessel. On the handle are also indications of binding; the shape of the handle suggests that it is derived from a leather form. A chip off the lip has been mended with a new piece (anciently). The upper surface of the lip shows traces of a lid having been luted on to it. The contents robbed; only a few stains of the residue left. On front of bowl the following inscription roughly engraved: <>
