385 A LARGE AMPHORA (CALCITE)

POSITION: S.E. corner of chamber, near doorway, under a mass of objets, such as stools, chair, boats and shields, etc., and lying on other miscellanea. See photos 1136, 1149, 1150 DIMENSIONS: Max. H. 66.0; Max. diam. 28.0; height of foot-piece 18.0; cents. DESCRIPTION: An amphora of veined semi-translucent calcite, having projecting lip, cylindrical neck, two broad flat handles, oviform bowl which rests upon a cylindrical spreading foot with broad flange top & bottom. The foot-piece to which the base of the amphora is fitted and luted is of a separate piece of stone. Both amphora and foot-piece are without decoration save imitation binding of the handles round the upper part of the neck. A survival of some earlier vessel from which this stone vessel derives its form. The flat handles show similar traces of an earlier form like leather. On the front of the bowl the following inscription engraved & filled in with blue pigment. <> Contents have been robbed. The staining of the interior shows that it was full of some oily or fatty substance or may be wood pitch. Chip off the foot.

There were no traces of it having had a lid.
