No. 339 Residue in vase

The residue in this vase, covering an area little more than the size of one's hand, had a hard black thick crust formed on the surface, but underneath the liquid was still viscid and of a dark raw-sienna colour. As large a sample as possible (free from extraneous dirt) was taken for analysis. As there are but little traces of staining in the interior of the vases other than dirt and the patch where the residue lay, I would suggest that the liquid the vessel contained was originally clear or light in colour.
