338. OVAL BASKET (LARGE SIZE) 1
(cf. No. 440, A).

POSITION: Resting on top of stones and calcite vases below sill of doorway of chamber (see photo No. 1135). The stones are from the blocking of the doorway.

DIMENSIONS: L. 45.0; W. 30.5; H. 22.0, cents.

CONTENTS: Dôm-nuts.

DESCRIPTION: The method employed in the construction appears to be the same as with the native basket-makers of today. It appears to be made up of 'skains' from the fruit bearing stalks of the date palm, bound with fronds of the dôm-palm (note minute spots peculiar to the fronds of the dôm-palm), both having been first soaked in water to render them leathery and pliable. The fibre 'skains' were probably obtained by beating the stalks with a mallet. A metal knife or scissors was probably employed for cutting out material; and a bone or metal bodkin for drawing through the fronds to connect up and bind together the strands (see photo No. 1130).
