Handlist description: Iron model tool with wooden handle

Card/Transcription No.: 316-4

316. Model Tools. 4

Materials:-

16 Handles: dark, red wood 16 Blades: iron.

Blades These have all the appearance of iron coated with oxide: they are attracted by a magnet and fragments of the corroded surface give the usual chemical re-actions for iron. The corrosion may be removed (and in one case was partly removed) by means of strong nitric acid, leaving a bright surface of metallic iron.

Weight. Weighed the three loose blades = (a) = 0.20 gram (b) = 0.20 " (c) = 0.25 "

Treatment Handles: Cleaned with damp sponge. Blades: Brushed and scraped gently and rubbed gently with a soft rag and paraffin oil (kerosene). Too thin and fragile for any complete cleaning to be attempted without risk.
