313. MODEL

CANOE (for hunting the hippopotamus and fowling) 1

POSITION: S.E. corner of chamber, next to south wall; resting on black shrine-like chest No. 296; bows towards west.

DIMENSIONS: L. overall (i.e., the longer axis of the boat) 159; Max. beam 24.6; Max. depth 11 cents.

DESCRIPTION: A primitive form of canoe developed from the reed float. Made out of a log of wood, shaped and planed with an adze.

The bow and stern rising in a curved line and ending in papyrus umbels.

Bulwarks 2 cents high, show a deck space of 100 cents long.

DECORATION: Coloured green with broad blue striations imitating papyrus reed stems of which the canoe is constructed; at intervals the yellow binding of the reeds (to hold them together); fore and aft ends ornaments (umbels of papyrus) - calyx yellow, whorl of stamens green and blue. Deck light yellow.
