r. small chequer pattern running diagonally of ivory and ebony. s. t. u., as i. j. k. v. chevron pattern as c., but ending with a band of diamond shaped pattern, of ebony and ivory. w. x. y. as i. j. k. z. striated panelling in ivory and ebony <> aa. handle of embossed sheet-gold, decorated with <>-signs to which are bound northern and southern prisoners.

REMARKS: Was found much broken and falling to pieces owing to the original adhesive material having decayed. The wooden stick was made of three pieces glued together, these had fallen apart and the veneer separated from the stick. Treatment - parts glued and the whole waxed with paraffin wax.
