REMARKS:

The faience beads, and those only, were covered with an efflorescence of fine crystalline material. This material consisted chiefly of carbonate of soda with a small proportion of common salt. The salt has probably been derived from that originally present in the alkali employed for making the glaze of the faience: the carbonate of soda has probably been derived from the alkali resulting from the decomposition of the faience, this alkali having become carbonated by means of the carbon dioxide of the air.
