Handlist description: Decorated chariot - Chariot body

Card/Transcription No.: 122-12

122.

3. (2) Decoration of body (cont.) This was enclosed within an applied band of bright red gold, with decoration in yellow granules, 1.2 in width. Design of panel see photograph. Inlay of gold, blue and green glass, and translucent calcite backed with paint. Eye of white glass? with black iris.

In right and left bottom corners at back snakes in bronze with gold inlay were fastened by means of three pegs projecting from bottom of the snake's body. Below the snakes <> in obsidian or black glass, the whole group forming the <> combination. These snakes must have had a purpose other than ornamental, for Chariot 120 has gold bars of a somewhat similar shape in same position. They fit, however, close to side, so difficult to see what purpose can be. Left snake missing. Right was found in Box 54. See notes on size etc. under 54 (b).
