Handlist description: Decorated chariot - Chariot body

Card/Transcription No.: 122-05

122

3 (2) Decoration of body. Whole surface covered with gesso, and overlaid with gold and inlay.

Between inner and outer rounded frames at top a panel of openwork. In centre group signifying union of the two kingdoms - sam sign in wood, stems of plants in bronze. On right of this six captive figures in wood, covered with gold, facing towards sam, first two Asiatics, then one African, then two Asiatics. Last figure is missing, but was probably an African. These figures are pegged to framework at head and feet. On left side no captive figures: space probably being left to accommodate the quiver. Below sam a slot 6.2 x 1.2, probably for reins. On upper surface of outer (supplementary) rounded frame a decoration of inlaid oblongs - colours in succession blue green blue yellow -, the blue and green being probably glass and the red translucent calcite with colour behind. Round outer edge of same an incised inscription on the gold.
