594. SMALL BOX (? pair to No. 495)

POSITION: Lying on floor under a mass of miscellanea S.E. corner of chamber (see photo 1149) (for lid see No. 575). DIMENSIONS: L. 29.0; W. 26.0; H. (including cornice) 16.5; cents.

DESCRIPTION: A small wooden box; frame-work of ebony; panels of a dark red-brown wood framed with strips of ebony and ivory; torus-moulding of ivory; pegs of framework of ivory; supporting shafts of bent red-brown wood with corner pieces of ivory; caps to legs of bronze (one of the four caps missing). Interior divided into two (one space 27.7 x 16, the other 27.7 x 7.9 cents) by wood partition of dark red-brown wood with ebony rail on top. The bottom of dark-red-brown wood (in three pieces). Front an ivory knob; on both front and back ends two bronze staples for (?) suspension. Contents: nil.

REMARKS: Condition bad, only temporarily repaired with wax. The lid (No. 575) was found separate.
