435. AN UNGUENT VASE (CALCITE) WITH FLANKING ORNAMENT 1
POSITION:
Thrown on a mass of objects, centre south end of chamber (see
photos 1149, 1150, also Nos. 1144, 1141, 1143).
DIMENSIONS:
Max. H. 47.6; Max. width 29.5 cents.
DESCRIPTION:
An unguent-vase in the form of a situla supported by a (tazza)-stand wrought of semi-translucent calcite, in two pieces ((1) the
vase, (2) the stand).
Both vase and stand are flanked on the right and left sides by an
open-fret-work ornament which incorporates the symbols: -
<> rnpt 'Years', <> cnh 'Life', <> Šmcw 'Upper Egypt', and <> T3-mhw 'The Delta' or 'Lower Egypt', expressive of 'Longevity' of
'the Two Kingdoms', i.e. Upper and Lower Egypt.
Decoration: A garland and chequer pattern incised and filled in
with blue pigment around top (below rim); details of symbols also
filled in with blue pigment.
