Materials:-
16 Handles: dark, red wood
16 Blades: iron.
Blades These have all the appearance of iron coated with oxide: they are attracted by a
magnet and fragments of the corroded surface give the usual chemical re-actions for iron.
The corrosion may be removed (and in one case was partly removed) by means of strong
nitric acid, leaving a bright surface of metallic iron.
Weight. Weighed the three loose blades =

Treatment
Handles: Cleaned with damp sponge.
Blades: Brushed and scraped gently and rubbed gently with a soft rag and paraffin oil
(kerosene). Too thin and fragile for any complete cleaning to be attempted without risk.
