271, G. An ivory object (? a burnisher for papyrus).

L. 16.5., Max. W. 4.4., Max. thickness, 2.2., cms.

An ivory object in the form of a gavel - probably a burnisher for burnishing the surface of papyrus.

By it being found with other writing implements it seems to belong to scribe's -outfit. (See also scribe's-outfit, Carnarvon Carter, Five Years Exploration Thebes, pl. ).

Carved out of two pieces of ivory: (1) the handle, (2) the top - the upper surface of which is plated with gold.

It is of lotiform, having a delicately carved corolla with appendages (see photo); and it bears on one side <> and on the other <>, both texts being engraved & filled in with pigment. The corolla is also engraved & filled in with pigment.
