266, B. 1
The sculptured alabaster (calcite) box concealed under the
wooden chest takes the form of a shrine upon a sledge. It was
covered with a large linen sheet folded over three times. The
lid of the box includes part of the frieze, the torus-moulding, a fluted cavetto-cornice, and a pent-like roof. The
underneath part of the lid is rebated to fit into the opening
of the box. The box includes the lower portion of the frieze,
the side panels (slightly set back), and a broad gilded dado.
Carved in relief on the four corners are the guardian
goddesses, whose protective arms enclasp the box: Isis on the
S. W. corner; Nephthys on the N. W. corner; Neith on the S. E.
corner; and Selket on the N. E. corner.
