407 LARGE AMPHORA (CALCITE)
POSITION:
On floor, upright position near west wall, opposite N. jamb of
doorway, and under a mass of objects including a table box No.
403. (See photos 1138, 1140, 1141, 1142, 1143.)
DIMENSIONS:
Max. H. 44.0; Max. diam. 38.0; Max. diam. of lip 25.5; cents
DESCRIPTION:
A large squat amphora of slightly veined semi-translucent
calcite, having cylindrical neck. slight rim to lip, globular
bowl, rim to flat bottom, and two heavy loop handles attached to
shoulders. Has no decoration nor inscription.
Shows on the upper edge of rim of lip traces of wax luting of
lid, and some 4 cents down neck traces where a linen binding had
been - probably to hold lid in place.
Contents robbed - traces on bottom of residue - the substance a
liquid (?) an oil of sorts, has left slight traces on the
(internal) sides suggesting the liquid was clear in colour.
