Sackler Library opening.

The Sackler Library opened on Tuesday 3 July 2001. When the move is complete, the Sackler Library will specialize in Archaeology, Art History, and Classics (Ancient History and Literature).

The Sackler Library will incorporate the collections of the former Ashmolean Library (including the Griffith Institute Library and Western Art Library), Classics Lending Library, History of Art Library, and Eastern Art Library.

The Griffith Library successfully moved into the Sackler Library and opened to readers on July 10, 2001. The entire Griffith collection, with the exception of a few very rare items, is housed in the first floor rotunda of the Sackler Library. For the first time the books are arranged in strict numerical sequence running from shelfmark 200 through 399. In addition, many of the not so large folios are being incorporated into the main section of stack to bring materials of similar subject matter into closer proximity.

The official opening will be on September 24, 2001. At that time new expanded hours will be announced. Holders of an (current, blue-stripe) Oxford University Card or Bodleian reader's ticket may register to use the Library. Outside readers should write to Diane Bergman, the Griffith Librarian at Diane.Bergman@SacLibean.museum to arrange a visit. All serious researchers in the fields of Egyptology and Assyriology are welcome.
